Anyone know what tree this lovely smelling flower belongs to? I took this photo yesterday at the botanical gardens at the locks in Ballard. But this morning I noticed my neighbors also have this tree. I'd love to know what the tree is!

Is it a dogwood? The leaves look right, but the blossom pattern is wrong...I think. =)
Beautiful picture!
Could it be a syringa? aka Peking tree lilac? Google Syringa and look at those pics, I am having a hard time telling. I need to look at the picture again. Beautiful, whatever it is. Did the bark look like it was peeling? If it was I bet it's a syringa. That's Idaho's state flower by the way!
It's definitely not a dogwood. It looks kinda like a hydrangea. The flower shape is definitely different from a traditional hydrangea, but the leaf shape and texture look just like a hydrangea. Look up the PeeGee hydrangea. It's very close.
Ask your neighbors if you can!
The flower clusters do look similar to the hydrangea but I think that is a shrub and these flowers where on a tree.
I'd ask my neighbor but they are on the block behind me and they might find it weird if I knocked on their door and asked them!
I googled the hydrangea after Paula recommended it and alot of people train them up as trees. Let me find one.....

I think this one is still young.
Yep, I think you are right. That looks like the ones I saw. The tree behind my house is at least 2 or 3 stories tall. I need to take a picture of it because it is breathtaking.
The neighbors behind our house have a few of those trees! It looks so pretty and delicate! It almost looks like my hydrenga trees (yep hydrengas come as trees too!) but more blossoms...wonder if it's in the same flower family.
