Broadripple Socks

I finished a pair of Broadripple Socks tonight. I did an afterthought heel instead of a heel flap and I like it so much better. I think I'm going to do all my socks with an afterthought heel from now on. I used this Afterthought Sock pattern(PDF) as a guide on how to knit the heel.

The socks are knit with Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks That Rock Lightweight. The color is called Hen Pecked I just love how they turned out. And they feel comfy too!

Very nice!! I like the colors, more subdued than a lot of STR, but still very pretty. How is the afterthough heel different from a short row heel? The finished result looks similar.

Huh, I usually don't like the way afterthought heels look, but I DO like that one. Maybe I'll try it on my next pair. It's so easy to do.

Hey, and thanks for being my blog friend.

For an afterthought heel you use waste yarn where you want the heel and knit the rest of the sock. You can do this for either toe-up or cuff down socks. Then when you are done knitting the sock, you remove the waste yarn and pickup the stitches. Then you knit the heel like you do for the toes. So you knit a row, decrease on both ends on the next, knit a row, decrease on both ends on the next, etc. until you have the same number of stitches you needed to finish the toe. Then kitchner and your done. Pretty easy.

Those look great!!! Is that one of the yarns you got at the BMFA sale?

The only problem with an afterthought heel is that you're just putting off the inevitable heel. :( I'm mad at heels right now.

Thanks! And yes, the yarn is from the BMFA sale. I've started another sock with another skein. This yarn really does rock! And my feet are happy.

I like the way the heel looks. Having only made two pair of beginner socks, are those instructions easy enough for me to tackle without having someone to coach me on? Thanks much for pix of pretty socks.

Yes, the heel is easy to do. You work it just like the toe, decreasing every other row. I highly recommend it.
